This Advent our theme at Salem will be “God’s Holy Darkness”. In the Northern Hemisphere Advent is a season of long nights and short days, and so we light Advent wreaths and decorate our houses and trees with twinkling lights. From the very beginning, darkness and light have been part of God’s magnificent universe. When God creates the light, the darkness is not extinguished or cursed, but it is complemented. Light and darkness each have a purpose in the created order. Each is necessary for the unfolding of salvation history. In this series , through holy scripture, hymns, and gifts of music, we will reflect on three biblical stories in which God uses the night for God’s holy purposes.
